START OF UNAPPROVED MINUTES for the 6/9/03 Meeting
The meeting at the club was called to order by President John Scott at 7:07 P.M.
John made remarks about the Whistler Boy Shoot with the Hoggard High School's
JROTC. Our club was represented by 2 teams of 2: Jon Mix and Sholar
Powell; Tom Mix and David Morgan and they did very well in the shoot.
The minutes of the last meeting (May 12, 2003), as appearing in the newsletter,
were accepted.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Skeet John Scott advised there were 10 shooters, 4 of whom were guest, at
yesterdays match.
Cowboy As reported in the newsletter. Next shoot is the 3rd Saturday of
the month, June 21st.
Silhouette 16 guns were shot. Next shoot is next Saturday at 10:00 A.M.
Field Pistol Tom Mix advised 20 guns or so were shot at the match. Next
match is the 4th Saturday of the month, June 28th at 10:00 A.M.
Action Pistol Fun shoot with 4 or 5 attending on the Holiday weekend.
Legislative Sholar Powell advised the action is on the Federal level regarding
assault type weapons ban. The President appears to be waiting for Congress
to defeat the ban so he does not have to take a position. Discussion.
OLD BUSINESS:
President The clubhouse roof still needs to be done and the cowboy shed needs
to be moved. Discussion.
NEW BUSINESS:
David Miller Regarding Civilian Marksmanship Program activities: The
Nationals are here and they are getting ready for the shoot. They need
volunteers for target scoring and training sessions are planned. The 5
meter BB match will be held at the Ashley High School football field and the
other shoots are indoors. If interested call David at 452-3416.
He plans to propose to the club an idea that is in the embryonic stage for a
skeet week for young shooters at the club. The Southeastern NC
Marksmanship Conference, made up of 8 high schools, will buy the 15 shotguns.
The shooters will be from the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The schools
would be responsible for insurance and chaperones. The club will provide
the site and a skeet shooting member at each function. The BGC would
maintain the guns and ammunition and be responsible to teach the youngsters to
shoot. Each school would have a month to shoot and then the 2 best
shooters from each school would have a match. Discussion. It was
recommended that David develop his idea and present it to the Executive
Committee.
Rim fire matches are going real good across the country.
He has submitted his annual report and BGC members, as ad hoc members of the
program, can purchase .22 cal. ammo for official functions cheaper than it can
be bought commercially.
The CMP Affidavit needs to be filled out and notarized before a person can shoot
in a CMP match.
At today's second annual "Whistler Boys" Shoot with Hoggard High
School's JROTC the BGC shooters won the trophy. Jon Mix and Sholar Powell
were the top shooters. The trophy, which is maintained at the clubhouse,
will have a plaque put on it reflecting this fact.
Ray Campbell The Friends of the NRA banquet will be held Saturday evening on
September 13th. Discussion. He would appreciate any help from club
members in selling individual and sponsor tickets. Call Ray at 520-4822.
Don Sloop The Fire Marshall in Fayetteville made dealers at the Fayetteville Gun
Show remove all powder and primers from the building. This was not due to
any NC law or local ordinance. Discussion. It appears from the
information provided by our club members that a local Fayetteville gun dealer
may have been behind the Fire Marshall's actions as a way to protect his
"turf".
ATTENDANCE: 18 which included 1 Probationary Member and 1 Complimentary Member.
ADJOURNMENT: Meeting was adjourned at 7:55 P.M.
END OF UNAPPROVED MINUTES for the 6/9/03 Meeting.
CMP RIMFIRE RIFLE MATCH: (Sholar Powell)
We are planning to have a Rimfire Sporter match on August 11, starting at
4:00pm, prior to the Club meeting. Rules for this match were sent out in a
previous newsletter. If you have a .22 rifle you'd like to shoot in this event,
dust it off and come on out. If you're interested in practicing for the shoot,
targets have been printed up and are in the Clubhouse. No entry fee for the
match, and no prizes other than bragging rights and your scores in the
Newsletter. If you have questions, call Sholar Powell at 799-5438.
JUNE COWBOY MATCH: (Ray Campbell)
Regulator Gazette
June 21, 1897
The Gazette will be sort of short this month due to one of the
following....Idaho Spuds mule ate the match results sheet or the results sheet
blew away while the six cowboys that stayed for the Quigley Bucket Match were
not paying attention..... Either way, we did have a cowboy match in June and as
best i can remember it was attended by ten or so cowboys and one cowgirl. The
only score that is for sure is that Slowpoke was the cowgirl winner. She got an
extra round of applause as she came by herself as her worse half (Slowhand) did
not attend due to a previous shooting engagement down in the Badlands of Sampson
County. We shot five stages as best I can remember and it was one of those days
you'd just as soon forget as most everybody had every sort of malfunction known
to man. Some were equipment related and some were brain related........
HeadLine: Quigley Bucket Will No Longer Hold Water
At the conclusion of the June match six cowboys settled in to do battle with the
400 yard Quigley Bucket. The bucket was suspended from a chain in front of the
400 yard berm. Idaho Spud and Wild Bill Storks were the first two competitors.
Both choose to shoot 45-70's in Winchester high wall actions. Each had five
shots, and the shooter with the most hits on the bucket was the winner. Each
sent their five rounds down range and when the bullets finally got to the
bucket, (It takes a while for a 500+ grain bullet to go that far), each had two
hits. The next two shooters was Dick Holliday and Roberdel. Roberdel was
shooting his 45-70 Sharps and Dick was shooting a high wall 45-70. The Match was
delayed when Dick's first round shot the chain in two. After re-engineering the
bucket support system Dick was given credit for three hits. Dick wanted to get
credit for shooting the chain in two but his protest fell on deaf ears. As the
smoke cleared, most shooters had two hits on the bucket and Dick was declared
the winner with three hits and his prize was a bunch of 45-70 empties that were
his to start with. Shooting the match was Idaho Spud, Wild Bill Storks, Dick
Holliday, Mad Dog, Colonel Case Hardin, and Roberdel.......Spud has welded a
bigger chain on the bucket that he guarantees will repel Dicks bullets so next
month we think we'll shoot it at 300 yards but we'll be shooting from shooting
stickets rather than the bench. So bring your long range rifle next month and
we'll do it again........As always, if you want to play and don't have a rifle
then we'll have one for you.....
So until we see you next month....Take a kid shooting......Respectfully
submitted....Ned Bluntline
FRIENDS OF THE NRA: (Ray Campbell)
The Friends of NRA event is planned for Saturday evening September 13,
2003.......Last year, events such as ours helped raise over $155,000 that went
for youth shooting projects in North Carolina. The fun and games will start at
6:00 PM and thanks to Don Sloop, who was one of the winners last year, you may
be able to win a gun just by buying a ticket and showing up. You may remember
that Don won a Ruger 10-22 Target Rifle and he is donating it to be given as a
door prize. Way to go Don!!!!!
Tickets for this years event will still be only $25.00. We will also be offering
individual and corporate sponsor packages. If you liked the Minuteman statue
that the sponsors got last year, you will really like the Trailblazer statue
that the sponsors will get this year. I'll have one on display at Shooters
Choice indoor range if you would like to see it. Something new we have this year
is three different levels of Sponsorship Participation. The Liberty Sponsors
$225.00 (which is what we've had in previous years) will get the Trailblazer
Statue, Sponsor hat and pin. The Heritage level Sponsors $500.00, receive in
addition to the above their choice of a Vanguard spotting scope or a Boyt
Sportsmans briefcase and gun sleeve. The Freedom Sponsors $1,000 will receive
their choice of a Henry Golden Boy Rifle or an NRA Executive Office Chair or a
Boyt Luggage Package. Those three packages were put together by the NRA but if
you've really got some money burning a hole in your pocket and want me to dream
up another package just let me know.....
As always I'll be trying to contact as many club members as I can by phone so if
you want to go ahead and get your tickets or get sponsorship information, please
give me Ray Campbell a call at 910-520-4822. If you want to help sell some
tickets, volunteers are welcome. I've really got a good feeling about this years
event so please be a part of making it a success...........Ray
