START OF UNAPPROVED MINUTES for the 2/10/03 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at the Sweetwater Café by President John Scott
at 7:00 P.M.
The minutes of the last meeting (January 13, 2003) were accepted as corrected.
President: Vote necessary to make the 2002 class of probationary members full
members. Sholar Powell Jr. read the names of the probationary members.
D. Lon Downing motioned, 2nd by Tom McGonigal, that the probationary members be
accepted as members by acclimation. Motion: Passed.
Vote necessary regarding the proposed new probationary members for 2003.
John explained the process used by the Membership Committee to select the 16
applicants, out of 35 applicants, to present to the members as probationary
members for 2003 class. A lottery was used and those not selected will
form a waiting list for membership. If a person on the waiting list
resubmits an application for membership next year then they will remain on the
waiting list in the same order as drawn in the lottery. Discussion.
Sholar Powell Jr. read the names of the 16 applicants proposed along with their
sponsor's names. Don Sloop motioned, 2nd by Tom Mix, to accepted those
whose names were read as probationary members. Motion: Passed.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Skeet There were 16
shooters at yesterday's match - good shoot - good time. March Winds Open
is March 15 and 16 and volunteers are need. Work day credit will be given.
Call Bill to sign up. Two (2) area lights were purchased for the parking
area and hopefully they will be set up in the next week or so.
Cowboy Tom McGonigal advised they had 9 people at the match and 2 were from out
of town. It was very cold but they had a lot of fun. Next match is
Saturday at 9:00 A.M.
Silhouette 1st match will be March 10th. Matches are the 2nd Saturday of
the month commencing at 10:00 A.M.
Training Tom McGonigal advised that 3 club members took the Basic Pistol Course
and then the Concealed Carry Course. They all got their concealed carry.
A Basic Rifle Course was given to some Boy Scouts of America at the Hoggard High
School range on February 24, 25 and 27th.
Bench Rest Don Sloop advised there is interest being expressed for bench rest
matches. No regulation matches can be held this year as you need to get
the information in by the 1st of the year. The fee to enter a match is now
$60.00. A fun match may be possibility in the fall. We have the
targets and equipment. If Bench Rest matches are resumed we will probably
need a new shed with 20 benches as over 50 are predicted to attend matches.
OLD BUSINESS:
Walter Futch Troop 220 of
the Boy Scouts of America had their day at the club on February 8th. Five
(5) became skeet qualified and five (5) became rifle qualified. They are
well outfitted for shooting.
NEW BUSINESS:
Tom Mix We need to buy
steel (T1 5/16" 4'x4') so 20 to 30 silhouette targets. Discussion.
Don Sloop motioned, 2nd by Tom McGonigal, that up to $500.00 be set aside to buy
the steel. Motion: Passed.
President We need a motion regarding the $631.11already paid to the
plumber. D. Lon Downing motioned, 2nd by Bill Murrell, that the bill
already paid be approved for payment. Motion: Passed.
Mike English requested the use of the club for BSA activity on Saturday, April
5th. He read the E-mail sent to the Secretary by Mike. No
opposition. The Secretary will send an E-mail notifying Mike that there
was no opposition.
We need to replace the roof of the clubhouse. He read the written proposal
from David Nance who will need 8 workers plus himself to do the work.
David would like to be able to offer 2 workday credits to the 8 workers he will
get to do the work. Cost of the materials will be $1116.00. Bill
Murrell motioned, 2nd by Scott Jamison, to have David do the job. Motion:
Passed.
Scott Jamison Requested to reserve both skeet fields on Thursday, April 17th
from 4 to 11 P.M. Secretary advised there was no calendar conflict.
No objection.
Tom McGonigal On 3/25 he will testify at the trial of the guys who broke into
the clubhouse and stole our property. The police did not recover our 22
ammo, cash box, $35, 1st Aid Kit nor phone. In addition we are out
$335 for re-keying and new keys, the broken hatch and the money paid for
phone service until we had it terminated. Discussion.
Mike Marsh His article in Sunday's newspaper about the Ashley High School JNROTC
shooters and their success even though they lack equipment. The Secretary
forwarded Mike's E - mail to members whose addresses he had. They need
help to purchase equipment, plane tickets, etc. connected with going to this
shoot. MGySgt David Miller addressed this lack of money for their shooting
program. Tom McGonigal advised that the Carolina Beach American Legion
Post bartender, Ed Jones, ran a dart tournament which raised $250.00 for
the team. A hat was passed at the meeting and the members present donated
$377.00.
Dick Brame Frequent flyer miles might be available for airline tickets for these
Jr. shooters if the club members became aware of the need and have enough time
to set it up.
Jon Mix Would like to schedule a "Club All Around Match."
Discussion. Trap was taken out of the all around due to the advantage it
would give to skeet/trap shooters over other members. Saturday, April 6th
will be the "Club All Around Match."
Ray Campbell Members would like to have another bullet order. He requested
a note be put into the newsletter. Last time over 200,00 bullets were
ordered and we get free delivery if we order over 130,000 bullets.
Sholar Powell Clothing, with the club logo, is usually ordered after we take in
the new probationary members. He will put the catalog in the club house
for member to look at. [Editor - Please do not remove the catalog from the
clubhouse.] An order form will be included with the newsletter.
Bill Murrell The club will be buying biodegradable skeet/trap targets.
They are $.30 more a box so it might be a good idea to raise the charge for a
round of skeet to $2.00. Motion by Bill Murrell, 2nd by Tom McGonigal,
that starting the 2nd quarter of this year on April 1st that a charge of $2.00
per round is set.
ATTENDANCE: 29 which included 1 Complimentary Member plus a guest.

BUCCANEER CLOTHING ORDER (Sholar Powell):
The Club will be placing
an order with the Queensboro Shirt Company for clothing with the BGC logo
embroidered on the left breast. Queensboro catalogs have been placed in
the Clubhouse, and you are free to order any item in the catalog. Please
do not remove the catalogs from the clubhouse. An order form is included
with this newsletter. [Editor's note: This will be a separate E-mail to
you all.] The deadline for having your order in is April 14. If
you're interested, take a look at the items available, and get your order in.
BUCCANEER BULK LEAD BULLET ORDER: (Editor)
Last year we put
together a bulk purchase of bullets and over 200,000 bullets were ordered so we
received free delivery. If you are interested in making a bulk purchase
call Ray Campbell at 520-4822 or 686-7339. Payment in advance will be
required for this since we have to send a check with the order. Last year
Ray pointed out that in some cases the price we got was less than half of the
cost of off the shelf cast bullets. Last year the minimum order of a style
was 1000 bullets except for the 45-70's which was 500 bullets.
CLUB ALL-AROUND SHOOT: (Jon Mix)
A "Club All-Around
Shoot" will be held on Sunday, April 6th. Jon advised that this shoot
will consist of the following:
• 25 shots - standing, offhand with any pistol/any sight at a 100 yard small
bore target at 25 yards with a 30 minute time limit
• 25 shots - standing, offhand with any rifle/any sight at a 100 yard small
bore target at 100 yards with a 30 minute time limit
• 25 shots in a regular round of sheet
Any pistol or rifle shot that cuts the black is awarded 1 point and 1 point is
awarded for each skeet bird broken. A perfect/maximum point score is 75.
SPORTING CLAYS FUN SHOOT: (Scott Jamison)
There will be a Sporting
Clays Fun Shoot for the Yahweh Center Children's Village at the Kelly
Sportsman's Club on March 29. The Yahweh Center is a treatment and placement
facility for abused and neglected children. There will be 15 new guns given away
in 5 Lewis Classes as well as several raffle ticket items. Other shooting games
will be available including a wobble, skeet and jap trap, the more you shoot the
more raffle tickets you get. It is a lot of fun and lunch is included. All
proceeds benefit the center. Cost is $65 preregistration or $75 day of the

Valentines Day Massacre Destroys Saloon Sign
Deacon
Dave had just been jilted by his best girl (Carbine Nora) and had gone to the
Bleeding Heart Saloon to drown his sorrows. After having a couple of dozen shots
of Old Croak he was in no mood for any Valentines Day tomfoolery. Light Loafers
Leroy went over to Dave and asked if he could be his Valentine and after busting
Light Loafers jaw Dave yelled "I've got your Valentine right here" and
produced his .44. You know, that steel heart had hung over the bar as long as
anybody could remember and Deacon was about to change that. Dave took his cross
draw pistol and put five rounds right in the center of the heart. Before the
smoke cleared, he whipped out the other .44 and put five more rounds in it. The
sound of that steel heart being hit with the .44's was as loud as any
blacksmiths anvil you've ever heard. Ole Light loafers was just getting off the
floor when Dave racked the lever on his rifle and put five more rounds into the
heart. The last round was too much for the steel heart and it fell from it's
perch and hit ole Light Loafers right in the head. Dave felt so bad about the
incident (after sobering up) that he has reconciled with Light Loafers Leroy and
Sheriff Holliday was said to have seen them riding off into the sunset together.

Wins Buntline Poker Tournament
(That Deacon Dave sure is getting a lot of press this month).
As the
Regulators were having trouble finding an honest dealer for the annual poker
tournament, Sheriff Holliday came up with a foolproof method to do away with
dealing off the bottom of the deck. Why not do away with the dealer
altogether???? Since we all know that the Sheriff makes the rules (usually so he
can win), the posse decided to see what he came up with. His answer to the
dealing problem was to put all the cards on a board in a big square
configuration and let you shoot your five card hand. When the smoke cleared from
the poker game the results were as follows.....Blacksmith had three queens, Tom
Two Times had two pair, Little Mix had two pair, Idaho Spud had three nines, Col
Case Hardin had one pair, Dick Holliday had a full house of Aces and Jacks, but
Deacon shot out 4 nines to take the pot. Luscious Louise had a nice pair but was
disqualified as she didn't shoot.....I hope the Cowgirls ain't read'n this....
Scores for the day went like this..Seniors--Doc Clock, Blacksmith, Idaho Spud,
Tom Two Times. First Flight --Dick Holliday, Little Mix, Deacon Dave. Second
Flight--Colonel Case Hardin, Silverado, Whispering Bill Memory.
We had a posse of ten for the Day after Valentines shootout. Whispering Bill
Memory came up from Columbus county to help us out with this months fracas....He
had a brand new leather holster rig and the belt was a little big....Sheriff
Holliday advised him not to have it taken up since most of the cowboys tend to
grow into their rig. Especially the belt. We were going to celebrate Tom Two
Times birthday by shooting a 67 round stage (he's 67 you see) but nobody wanted
to waste that much ammo on Tom's birthday so we just gave him a slack on the
rules so he might win something.....I thought he was much older than that
personally.....
A lynch mob is being formed so we'll be ready when we find out who shot the four
.223 bullets into the cowboy steel......Hey guys.....that steel ain't much, but
it's all we got so practice all you want on it with the pistols but cowboys
don't use .223's....Leave them over on the rifle range.....
That's about it for this month so look for us to posse up again on the third
Saturday of March (Darn this year is getting going already). Maybe some warmer
weather will bring out the cowgirls again and better yet some Junior
shooters.....So until next time remember.......Take a kid shooting........Ned
